Road Trip

September 9th, 2010

It’s all starting to come together.

Over the last few months, I’ve been having vague thoughts about a photo expedition. Somewhere reasonably remote, where I can get back to doing some landscape work. As it happens, my wife Kylie is heading to Adelaide for a conference in November. Of course, she’s flying, but I’ve decided to rent a camper and take 10-ish days to drive from Brisbane to Adelaide, via outback NSW. Here’s the proposed route:

I’ve secured two-and-a-half weeks off from the day job, and have started putting the feelers out for some corporate sponsorship for the trip. Telstra have already come to the party, agreeing to provide a Next-G wireless broadband card for the duration. This will allow me to post photos, and blog and tweet updates from the road – you’ll be able to follow along with the hashtag #photoadventure2010. I’ve also approached a company that owns a couple of the major campervan hire companies and the initial response from them was promising. I think I’ve made them a pretty attractive offer (photos for their stock library, mention of their support in blog posts and exhibition materials), so here’s hoping.

If that comes through, I’ll save up to a couple of thousand dollars on the trip. Which is, of course, leading me to think of where else I could spend that money. Today’s thoughts are leaning toward getting some lighting gear and doing some portraits along the way. We’ll see.

Oh, what was that you said? Exhibition? That’s the plan. In early 2011, I’m planning to exhibit some of the photos from the trip. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on when and where.

I’ll accompany you to some of your favourite places and capture you with your friends and family, your partner or just you. Maybe it’s your favourite Saturday picnic spot, the beach, or checking out the local markets. Together, we’ll capture those everyday moments that make up the real you.

Around London

August 24th, 2010

Back in May, I had the opportunity to travel to the UK work. Not a lot of time for myself, but I did manage to spend a weekend in London. When I’m travelling, I prefer to capture the everyday. Of course, I did the tourist thing and shot the Tower Bridge, the London Eye and Hyde Park, but there’s nothing like finding those quiet moments in the life of the city.

This young artist perched himself high up on the plinth of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. Below him, tourists were climbing all over the structure, taking photos in front of the lions, but this guy had found his spot and was happy in his own little world.

The Sunday markets in Brick Lane are known for the wide range of weird and wonderful merchandise. And weird and wonderful people. This lady had taken some time out to watch a performance by The Sonic Manipulator. Weird. Wonderful.

Brick Lane has lots of stalls selling bikes, bike parts and bike repairs. They range from one guy I saw who walked up, laid a couple of wheels on the ground and waited for a buyer, to more established ‘mobile bike shops’.

The London Underground. Home to some of the longest, steepest escalators I’ve ever come across.

And finally, Aldgate East Tube Station.
