Coolum

Hi. Remember me? It’s been a while, and a lot has happened since I last posted.

For one, I’ve gone back to a job in my other profession – environmental consulting – which means I’m back to being an “amateur” photographer. Whatever that means.

But what it has meant, from a practical perspective, is that I haven’t picked up a camera for a few weeks. Until this weekend, when I spent a couple of days at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast. Swimming in the ocean. Eating takeaway. Taking the dogs to the beach. Making photographs. Does it get much better?

Environmental Portraits – Harmony Vision Care

Environmental portraits. They’re always much more interesting than a headshot in front of a white background. Taking portraits in a person’s home or workplace helps to tell their story, or the story of their business. Generally, environmental, or location portraits provide more context than a traditional studio portrait, and help subjects be more relaxed in familiar, less ‘formal’ surroundings.

Recently, I was engaged to shoot some promotional images for Harmony Vision Care, an optometry clinic on the Gold Coast, who specialise in vision health for children. With that in mind, we created a series of portraits of the staff interacting with a patient, using some of the tools they use every day in the clinic.

The Valley

I spent some time wandering around Fortitude Valley on Friday night, looking for light.

Social Media Portrait Project

Portraits, headshots, profile photos. Whatever you want to call them, I want to take more of them. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram, or are friends with me on Facebook, I want to take yours.

So, between now and January 26, 2016, I’m going to have a small studio set up at home in Brisbane’s inner-ish southwestern suburbs (5 minutes walk from the nearest train station). Come and visit me! Meet my dogs! Have your photo taken! For free!

I’ll provide you with both high and low resolution copies of at least one photograph, for you to use as you please. I may use the photographs on my website, and any Heath Carney Photography marketing materials, but will never sell them or use them in any other way without your permission.

To arrange a time, either complete the form below, or send me a message through your social media network of choice.

2015 Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition

Twice a year, Brisbane Powerhouse hosts an exhibition that makes me wish I was a photojournalist – the World Press Photo Exhibition and the currently showing Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition.

The Nikon-Walkley exhibition showcases the best in Australian photojournalism from the previous year, and contains some wonderful examples of the craft. Not least of which is Andrew Quilty’s photo of the year “Baby Burn Victim in Boost Hospital”, which shows a baby in Afghanistan, completely wrapped in a space blanket being treated for burns from an oil heater.

Although these kind of images are what we generally see in press photography exhibitions, what I really love about the Nikon-Walkley exhibition is the photographs of Australian life. Maybe it’s because of the lack of the ‘discretion advised” war photography room, but the Australian images almost always seem so much more vibrant than those we generally see in the World Press Photo. These couple of shots from Brett Costello’s sport collection are fine examples.

Of course, I always come away with a favourite photograph or photo essay from the exhibition. This year, it was Lisa Maree Willams’ series with the Walker family on Rio Station in central Queensland. The optimism in these photos of a family suffering through Queensland’s worst drought really captures for me the spirit of Australia, and illustrates perfectly the warmth and beauty of this country and its people.
